Dr. Lani Cupjoy

Lani Cupchoy is a Public Historian-Artivist-Photographer-Filmmaker whose intersectional research focuses on Chicanx-Latinx Studies, Asian Pacific Island Studies, and Ethnic and Gender Studies. A first-generation scholar of Kanaka Maoli-Chinese-Afro-Mexicana descent, Lani teaches public history courses and has a range of creative works including journal publications, op-eds, art installations-exhibitions and community archiving such as “Fragments of Memory: Tales of a Wahine Warrior” (Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies), “The Heart of a Hawaiian: We Are Mauna Kea” (Honolulu Civil Beat), and “Not Just About UH Football: Bypass Road Threatens Hawaii’s Warrior Heritage” (Hawaii Island Journal). She is a female vocalist-producer-singer-songwriter-musician with seven singles in Hawaiian music. Lani is also an award-winning filmmaker of Truth Seekers (2016), Urban Seeds (2019), Food Medicine (2020), and Aloha Soul Food (2022), documentaries that illuminate the power of community engagement and social justice. Her upcoming documentary Islantrification, which documents the journey of Native Hawaiian families resisting predatory gentrification on Maui, Hawaii will be released in 2023. Similarly, her forthcoming book, Hawaiian LA: Public Culture, Community, Memory and Collectivity will be coming out in 2024. Lani currently serves as Assistant Professor of Chicana(o) Latina(o) Studies, College of Ethnic Studies at California State University at Los Angeles.

Joey Quenga is a multi-talented media executive with an impressive track record in the entertainment industry. With over two decades of experience as a producer, radio personality, and CEO of Island City Media Group, he has earned a reputation as a visionary leader and a creative force in the media world.

 

With roots in Guam, Joey Quenga has always had a passion for storytelling and a deep appreciation for his island's rich culture. After earning his bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University, he returned to Los Angeles and began his career in radio as a host and producer. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the most popular personalities on Dash Radio, a digital radio station that broadcasts from Hollywood, CA.

 

Joey's success in radio led him to pursue other opportunities in media. He co-founded Island City Media Group, a creative media agency that creates original content for television, film, and digital platforms. Under his leadership, the company has produced countless content, commercials, and other projects that showcase Pasifika’s unique culture and history.

 

In addition to his work with Island City Media Group, Joey Quenga is also a cultural consultant for Disney. He has helped the entertainment giant accurately portray Pacific Islander culture in its films and television shows, and live performances.

 

Joey's dedication to preserving and sharing Pacific Islander culture has earned him numerous accolades and awards. He is a respected member of the NHPI community and a sought-after speaker and consultant on issues related to media, culture, and diversity.

 

Joey Quenga is a true trailblazer in the entertainment industry, and his passion for storytelling and cultural preservation continues to inspire and influence people worldwide.
